Ingredients

For the Sandwich
  • 4 slices Sourdough Bread Consider whole grain for added health benefits.
  • 8 oz Fresh Mozzarella Cheese Use mozzarella packed in water for extra juiciness.
  • 2 medium Ripe Tomatoes Opt for seasonal heirloom varieties for the best flavor.
  • 1/4 cup Fresh Basil Leaves Select vibrant, aromatic leaves for maximum flavor.
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted Butter Adjust salt if using unsalted butter.
  • 1 tablespoon Balsamic Vinegar Use sparingly to avoid overpowering the sandwich.
  • to taste Salt
  • to taste Pepper
  • optional Red Pepper Flakes For a kick, if desired.

Equipment

  • skillet
  • cutting board
  • Knife
  • spatula
  • Bowl

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Begin by softening 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a small bowl. Slice the fresh mozzarella into 1/4-inch thick pieces and do the same with the ripe tomatoes. Wash and gently dry the vibrant basil leaves.
  2. Take two slices of sourdough bread and butter one side of each. On the unbuttered side of one slice, layer the mozzarella pieces, followed by the tomato slices and fresh basil leaves. Drizzle a bit of balsamic vinegar over the layers, then sprinkle with salt, pepper, and optional red pepper flakes for spice. Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side facing out.
  3. Preheat a skillet over medium heat. Carefully place the assembled sandwich into the skillet and grill for 3-4 minutes, or until the bottom turns a golden brown. Flip the sandwich and grill the other side for another 3-4 minutes until the mozzarella melts beautifully.
  4. Remove the Tomato Basil Grilled Cheese from the skillet. Allow it to cool slightly on a cutting board before slicing it in half. Serve warm.
