Method
 

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk and heavy cream over medium heat. Stir occasionally until the mixture is warm but not boiling.
  2. Whisk in the cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and salt until fully dissolved and smooth.
  3. Add the red food coloring and vanilla extract, stirring until the color is evenly distributed.
  4. Continue to heat the mixture until it is hot, but do not let it boil. Remove from heat.
  5. Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and top with whipped cream.
  6. Garnish with chocolate shavings or sprinkles for an extra festive touch.
