Method

Step‑by‑Step Instructions for Apple Upside Down Cake
  1. Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples, aiming for slices about 1/4 inch thick. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Melt 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, 1 cup of brown sugar, and 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon in a saucepan over medium heat until smooth and bubbly, about 3-5 minutes. Pour the caramel into a greased 9-inch round cake pan.
  3. Layer the sliced apples over the caramel mixture in a circular pattern, overlapping slightly.
  4. In a mixing bowl, whisk together 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. In another bowl, cream together 1 cup of granulated sugar and 2 large eggs until fluffy. Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and 1/2 cup of milk, mixing well before folding in the dry ingredients.
  5. Pour the cake batter over the arranged apples in the cake pan, spreading evenly. Bake for about 40 minutes, or until golden brown, and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Carefully invert the cake onto a serving plate.
