Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Whisk in ¼ cup of flour for 1-2 minutes until golden.
  3. Gradually pour in 2 cups of milk while whisking to avoid lumps; simmer for 5-7 minutes until thickened.
  4. Remove from heat and add 2 cups of shredded sharp cheddar cheese, stirring until smooth. Season with salt and cayenne pepper.
  5. Slice 4-5 medium potatoes thinly and layer half in the baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over them.
  6. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce, gently settling layers.
  7. Sprinkle an additional cup of shredded cheese on top.
