Ingredients

  • 2 large apples such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp, sliced into thin wedges
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs panko or regular
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese softened
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

  1. Begin by preparing the apple fries. Slice the apples into thin wedges and set aside.
  2. In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix well.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until smooth.
  4. Place the breadcrumbs in a third shallow bowl.
  5. Dip each apple wedge first into the flour mixture, then into the egg mixture, and finally coat with breadcrumbs. Set aside on a plate.
  6. In a large skillet, heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil over medium heat until hot (around 350°F).
  7. Carefully add the breaded apple wedges to the hot oil in batches, frying until golden brown on all sides, about 3-4 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  8. For the caramel cream dip, in a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, caramel sauce, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth and creamy.
  9. Serve the apple fries warm with the caramel cream dip on the side.

Notes

  • For a healthier version, bake the apple fries at 400°F for 15-20 minutes instead of frying, flipping halfway through.
  • Experiment with different spices in the flour mixture, such as ginger or allspice, for a unique flavor twist.
