Swirled Garlic Herb and Cheese Bread is a delightful and flavorful bread that combines the richness of cheese with aromatic herbs and garlic, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (or 1 tablespoon dried parsley)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. While the dough is rising, mix the minced garlic, parsley, oregano, mozzarella, and Parmesan in a bowl.
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a rectangle about ½ inch thick.
  7. Spread the cheese and herb mixture evenly over the dough.
  8. Starting from one long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Pinch the seams to seal and place the log seam-side down on a greased baking sheet.
  9. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Cover the dough with a towel and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  10. Beat the egg and brush it over the top of the dough for a golden finish.
  11. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Let it cool slightly before slicing.

Notes

  • For a twist, try adding cooked spinach or sun-dried tomatoes to the cheese mixture.
  • If you prefer a stronger garlic flavor, increase the garlic to 4 cloves or add garlic powder to the dough.
